APPY NEW YEAAAA

Happy New Year, people. Congratulations.
I spent the last year finishing up my time in France, though mostly traveling, then moving back to the good ol’ US of A and starting up this little business. I never would’ve thought that I’d be a businessman, but that’s what the year brought me.

Anyway, I wanted to write this post to announce that I’m getting on the resolution bandwagon. Why do I need to announce this to my 3 readers? So you can hold me accountable. More so, because I want to hold myself accountable. So that, at the end of the year, I can stumble upon this post and read it, probably in disgust. I know a lot of people hate resolutions, and a lot of people do them every year. I have to say that I don’t usually care either way. I can be a little critical of resolutions like “eat healthier than last year” or “exercise more than last year.” These are so vague. Besides, I could accomplish both of these in a day by exercising for 20 minutes and eating a carrot. But I definitely won’t.

Instead, I want to make a few resolutions that are at least a little concrete, feasible, and interesting to me. There are a couple of problems with the goal “get muscular.” That sounds like a great goal. If I were ordering off a menu of resolutions, I’d take a “get muscular.” Unfortunately, people tend to forget about the work that accomplishing a resolution requires. I’d love to be muscular, I just don’t want to get muscular. And so I won’t.

And so, without further ado, my list of resolutions for 2011… drumroll please.. *dudududududududududududud….*

  • Learn guitar
This is a little vague. I want to be able to play guitar, let’s say. I bought one in France and started learning, but I’ve got a ways to go. I choose guitar for a couple of reasons: It’s supposedly dead simple to teach yourself, everyone has one so you can play it anywhere, and the ladies love it. Not that I am lacking love from ladies.
  • Learn a language
Again, this is a little broad. More specifically, I want to be proficient in another language. I haven’t decided whether I want to pursue Persian or Spanish yet, but I’ve been learning both of them for a little while now. I guess I’ll just stick with both for now.
  • Write a book
This one I’m most passionate about. It’s been a dream of mine since I was in elementary school. Well, publishing a book has been the dream. I’m not going to make publishing a book a resolution, but I’d like to write something I consider nearly publish-worthy. I’ve already started and stopped a dozen times, but I want to make a commitment.
  • Stay away from red meat
Pretty clear cut. I was a vegetarian for 6 months then started eating poultry on Thanksgiving (how could I resist?) – so I just haven’t been eating red meat since then. I think I’ll keep it up all year, unless I end up traveling.

And before I go, a look back at some pieces of 2010:

I’m thankful for what has been the best year of my life, arguably. I don’t think anyone out there cares enough to argue over what the best year of my life has been, but that’s what I have to say. May this coming year be better than all the years that it follows, and worse than all the years that will follow it.

I think it is only appropriate that, reading this post now, about 3 months later, that I ask how you are doing on these?? :)

Congrats on your new uncle-dom. She’s got herself a great uncle in you!
