Les Vacances, le travail

After two 12-hour weeks, I am already on vacation.  We have two weeks of vacation, and we just started!  So, what do you do during holidays in France?  I’d like to travel (and might) but will put that off for now.  I’m really broke, so I jumped on the chance to work during the holidays.  It’s only for the first week, but it’s a way to earn a couple of extra euros.  I was given the impression that I’d be working with students who wanted to improve their English, but found that I’m working with students who need to improve their English.  Most of these students were forced to attend because of their low levels.  That also happens to mean that a lot of the students are trouble makers.  You know the type, little wannabe hoodlums.  Whippersnappers!  If there are any students who actually want to be there, it’s hard to tell because the troublemakers prevail.

Brian (the other American assistant) and I got together over the weekend to discuss lesson plans.  We made 4 pretty solid lesson plans, one for each day.   They included fun activities, and they completely bombed.  Well, it could have gone worse, but we both thought it was a disaster.  The class as a whole just didn’t care and there was very little control.   I’m kind of a jackass and don’t tolerate any of that crap, but it’s hard to do anything here because the classes are so big and the students are on holiday.  Plus, these are basically all of our problem students combined into one class.  If you have any ideas of lessons that might interest these brats, please do let me know.   I’ve only worked one day of this stage and am ready for the holidays to be over.  Oh well, at least I’m makin’ some dolla dolla bills y’all.

So why am I broke and in need of work during the holidays?  I’m actually spending less money than I planned on everything that I planned, but there have been a lot of unexpected expenses.  For instance, I had to pay 75usd to get the internet setup.  I had to pay around 350usd for a transportation pass, because I don’t have the luxury of living next to my workplace.  That accounts for nearly half of what I brought, and I didn’t foresee either expense.  I guess I should have, but I’m an idiot.

By the way, I just subscribed to a phone plan so my cell number has changed.  I won’t put it on here because that would make it too easy for my stalkers, but let me know if you don’t have it already.

Try “2 truths and a lie”. Seriously that game for some reason gets French kids really interested. How did you get extra work during the holidays? Lucky!
