I’m trying to take advantage of living in Europe by traveling as often as I can. A weekend in Dublin, a trip to Italy, a vacation in Morocco – it’s not bad, but there’s so much more to see! I’d love to see some more of Europe, but also wish I could see some more of the country I’m living in. I’d prefer, however, to have company. So, would anybody like to be my travel buddy this summer? I’m thinking of a few options:
1) France en Stop
One way to see France is en stop. This could take us anywhere around France, and maybe to a couple of surrounding countries. Just have to end in Paris because that’s where the cheap flights leave from.
2) Way of St. James
I’ve wanted to do a long distance cycling trip for a long time. The Way of St. James is a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Northwest Spain. Leaving from Nantes, it shouldn’t take more than a month by bike if we go at a slow pace and stop in towns along the way. I’m hardly athletic, but I don’t think it would be too difficult. Riding 50 miles a day shouldn’t be hard (neither should be walking 10 miles a day, if you prefer to go that way). There are cheap hotels for pilgrims along the way, but I wouldn’t rule out camping and couchsurfing when possible.
3) Eastbound
Some of the cheapest tickets I found back home to the good ol’ U S of A were from Riga, Latvia for less than 400usd. I haven’t really thought much about this one, but it wouldn’t be a bad idea to head East and see several countries along the way. Latvia is in NE Europe, bordering Russia on the East and sandwiched between Estonia and Lithuania. You’d probably cross half a dozen countries getting there. I just don’t know how I’d get there, and luggage would pose a problem.
So, what do you think about these options? I’m also open to other ideas, but this is just what I’m thinking about now. I’ll probably buy tickets homebound at the end of February, depending on certain things, and would start really planning then, if I do indeed decide to do one of these. Also, depending on certain things, I may not go at all or may go much later. That will all be decided at the end of the month. Anyone interested in joining me, assistants or otherwise?
Lastly, does anyone have ideas for the April vacation?
